Raukksaan and her soldiers edged into the chamber, as the whining sound descended into a near bellow.
The light's blue tinge was increasing and the floor's movement slowed.
She approached the console at the center of the room because it reminded her of a shrine with which she had once been familiar. A screen in the center of the counter was making geometric patterns in time to the howling of the generators -- that's what they were, but she hadn't known that before.
"Boss, are you glowing on purpose?" asked Benny.
She heard his voice a lot more clearly than she should have. She saw him from several angles at once: she even saw herself standing there.. no, more like falling over.. Definitely falling over..
She realised she was inside the brain of this monstrosity. This arcology, her new memories informed her. One large sized, self sustaining mobile living environment. Great. She had become a ship.
She got back to noticing her compatriots just as they were divvying up the contents of her now lifeless form's pockets. It took a bit to figure out how to talk to them.
"HEY YOU! STOP THAT!"
These were the first words from the public address system in over a century. It sounded throughout the city, and more than a few inhabitants took it personally. Raukksaan noticed more than a few hasty exits and whispered apologies among her perceived innards.
Her former buddies were making for the door, which she whizzed shut ahead of them. She sent a set of security 'bots trundling off in the direction of their control room. Judging from the way folks screamed and their avidly demonstrated desire to be elsewhere, Raukksaan guessed that the 'bots had been out of general circulation recently.
She reached out to find out what other goodies she could inflict on her compatriots. Turning out the lights while depressurizing the compartment seemed to give them something to occupy themselves with. When she overrode the door locks to allow the 'bots in, the difference in air pressure yanked them off their wheelbases and onto the gasping gang.
Born a human, she is now a Cybernetic Installation in a floating arcology in Earth's future. She floats on (in Earth mapping) the same spot she was born -- right over where the city of Grey Moth would be.
Raukksaan, former pretender to the Sea Throne, is now a Cybernetoc Installation in control of the floating city of Soleri in the Atlantic Ocean in the Earth's future.
As a CI, she no longer has magic powers, and of course she can't go back to Zam. She resents this exile to no end.
She controls all utilities and electronic communications on Soleri.
One unique item under her control is a radiation chamber which can accomodate a being the size of a horse. Within it, she can intentionally and selectively mutate any living being.
She succeeds in getting exactly the mutation she intends based on this table:
| % Success | ||
|---|---|---|
| Race | Mental | Physical |
| Human | 95 | 95 |
| Dwarf | 95 | 80 |
| Elf | 80 | 95 |
| Half-elf | 90 | 95 |
| Halfling | 90 | 90 |
| Humanoid | 85 | 85 |
| Other | 55 | 45 |
Roll for success every five attempts made on the same being. A failure results in a random roll on the mutation tables. She can't directly counteract such a mistake. Unguent's druids regard her agents as abominations and will kill them immediately on sight, unless given very good reason not to.
The city of Soleri is a major buyer of slaves from the false Crusader ships, for which they trade the fish caught by the massive harvesters far below the waterline. Far below the harvesters, some of these slaves are working on building a large Gate to Zam. (They have a one-person model working intermittently at the center of the city.) Other slaves work the harvesters and many spend their lives repairing the
city. Slaves are kept in line with electronic control bracelets.
There are two ports -- one for trade, and one for military.
Around the rest of the perimeter are groups of low-tech squatters who live on the fish they catch and generally ignore the goings on of the inner city.
Raukksaan's short term agenda is to hold her position above the spot that coincides with Grey Moth on Zam. She suspects them of forcing her imprisonment, although she has sent agents there for magical instruction.
Take one world peopled with humans, elves, dwarves, trolls, orcs, grippli . . . -- the whole shebang. Pop one continent into an oven, after evacuating the residents. Let bake until golden brown. Add druids; lots of druids, who work to revive the ecosystem.
Then bring the people back.
Sprinkle in dozens of secret societies and organizations some young and vital, some way past their usefulness. The average being-on-the-street knows at least one member.
Stir in a people wih a seven millenium monopoly on sea travel and transport -- the teamsters meet the coast guard.

Holiday
Night of the Winter Solstice -- the longest night of the year. Vergaantzers celebrate by settling old scores. From mid-afternoon to sundown, there are parades in the street in full armour, as well as masquerade balls.
Everywhere the night is celebrated vigorously. Normally Lawful Evil folks act Chaotic at this time. The festivities are never explained to outsiders, even when party members demand to know why the house next door exploded.
This looks like your ordinary garden variety gold ring. This one deflects the effects of all incoming forces except gravity, (non threatening) heat, and light. The effects go to the person physically closest to the wearer, up to a range of 30 feet. All savings throws are by the second person.) If the wearer is alone, the ring has no effect.
Among other things deflected are nutrition from food, refreshment from water, beneficial spells as well as bad, and intoxication by alcohol -- it's great for drinking games!
An ideal way to introduce this goody to the game is to have a monster wearing it -- perhaps a doppleganger?
This is the converse of water walking. To the wearer, dirt and gravel are like water.
Most likely, anyone donning this ring while standing on ground will immediately vanish with a 'sploosh' sound. Visibility underground is nil, and drowning is a possibility.
If the ring is removed (or dispelled) underground, the wearer is stuck.
The wearer may pull objects and beings under if he/she has the strength to lift them.
Professional quality rock music is performed about 30% by bards, 30% by druids, 30% by multi-class individuals and 10% by people with no class whatsoever.
Unknown to most Zam residents, one of the first rock'n'rollers was originally from Earth. His name was Clement Firestone, and he came to Zam in our 1970's. He brought his Stratocasters, 3 build-your-own harpsichord kits and wire enough of various thicknesses to produce strings for a century. The story is that he travelled back and forth between the planes for about a week, so he had time to gather his stuff. (He was rich on Earth.) His arrival on Zam was probably the work of one or more of the great powers. Unguent would've stood to profit from competition for Ovalt. Firestone worked with dwarves to get good strings and mechanisms, and he had clerics develop amplification magic - electronics don't work on Zam. Anyone from Earth might recognize his emblem - the Stratocaster.
Only 1% of performers have been from Earth. One such person was Neleve, who arrived on Zam about fifteen years after Firestone. After studying magic, he developed dweamors to be used on horns, winds and bagpipes.
Radio doesn't exist, but Nevele developed dweamors to replay specific performances. These are very rare. Rock is not taken for granted on Zam. Performances are big events!

Okay, so there aren't any professional stargazers here. It does offer a good view of the palace.
"Frenkenford sits on top of a great and ancient city" (True. Buhnn is underneath.)
"Aliens will invade from space in five years." (False. This is only believed by the Sea Peoples. A different version was deliberately started by the dwarves -- they alleged that the planet would fall into the sun.)
"The Knights of the Towers have information that could well spell the downfall of Molokai." (True, but very misleading. The Knights are agents of Molokai, thus they aren't forthcoming with this intelligence!)
"Ever notice that some wizards smell like seaweed?" (Not literally true, but it hints at the existence of Grey Moth.)
"Raukksaan! You don't have to turn out your red light!"
"A raft of bones was seen floating down the Notushabi, with an altar on it made of bent armour."
