Lost lies in the lush Zarb Valley, which is surrounded by some of the bleakest terrain in southern Zam. During the Shattering, the valley was shielded by being geographically behind one of the participants. Ever since then, it has attracted all sorts of creatures and beings for a multitude of reasons ranging from good grazing to old magic. Druids and rangers will easily notice that the ambience here is different from most of Zam.

Lost itself was founded 973 years ago by FangEsq, a half-orc who deserted the Molokai expedition to poison the Druidwash two years earlier. Many cities had been founded in the Zarb previously, but they all had fallen in their first decade. FangEsq just happened to accidentally set his up where an ancient dweamor still had the power to make the walls impregnable.

In fact, Lost is situated smack dab on the site of Dalquon's Manor, which left Zam's plane when Unguent first slept, 3745 years ago. The castle maintenance spell does several things besides strengthening the walls. It causes trash and waste to vanish the instant they are thrown away, thus the city is spotless. It causes food and drink to stay fresh indefinitely and prevents rust and tarnishing. It automatically raises an alarm whenever anyone attempts to enter the city over or under the walls or from the air. The would-be invaders (all those within ten feet of the perimeter regardless of depth, and all who drop within 100 feet above the city) are hit with a flesh to steel spell, like flesh to stone as cast as by a thirtieth level magic user. The officially recognized leader of the city is given the power to restore any steel invader to flesh at will. Most of the rest are piled together in a heap in the center of town above a crater created by a red dragon which attempted to swoop down to visit a social occasion. By now, the dragon is buried out of sight, so any party member who rises to the leadership of Lost may be in for a surprise if all the creatures are restored at once. Total restoration will also happen when the castle defense spell runs out. Any metal figure removed from within the Zarb valley will also be restored.

As a result of all the effects of the castle defense spell, the inhabitants all lead a very careless lifestyle. When playing a Lost resident as an NPC, the DM should keep this in mind.

(If the DM is into strange adventures, this spell could run out some time when the adventurers are in town.)

About half the humans in town claim ancestors in Bartalt_and_Andrea">Bartalt and Andrea's party which dropped by 841 years ago.

This ragged looking two story stone building is by itself just inside a corner of the wall. Only rubble remains from what had been surrounding structures. Menlo's stock of curiosities and enchanted whatnot can be volatile. From the outside, passers by may notice that the windows look a bit strange -- they are lined with plastic window liner. People entering will immediately notice that the walls, floors and ceilings of each room are lined with garbage bag green plastic. It's ugly, but it usually keeps the merchandise from interacting.

Originally from Earth, Menlo was sent to Zam twenty years ago by Raukksaan after she worked a few changes (mutations) on him. When he got to Zam, he studied at Grey Moth, and then skipped out on his mission and came to Lost. His mutations help him in his task of analysing unknown magic items. If a sample gets too troublesome, he uses Planar Travel to send it to some other plane to wreak its havoc. This procedure hasn't always worked perfectly, so Menlo is light blue in color.

Among the services offered here are item identification, cursed item removal and item elimination. Upon being handed an item to identify, Menlo invariably cries out, "Oh wow! Let's see what this does!" He usually then shows it to a wooden bust of a gnome and says, "Well Arturo, whaddya think?" (The bust is non-magical.)
