Islands overview This page is for the preliminary planning of a possible roleplaying game based in Matt Wagner's Grendel universe. It would take place on a pair of man-made islands in the southern Pacific ocean, advertised as a vacation spot for grendels. I figure it might happen right after the Devil May Care story.

I have yet to decide on several basic things, including the name of the islands and the name of the resort. I have already named that circular thing; it's the Monocle. This is rooted in the notion of basing the culture on British imperial hunters and such. (Thus the potential name: The Devil You Say!) Perhaps a Tom Sharpe sort of satire. Perhaps not.

Grendels would come here to hunt and fight, and the staff would have to cope with this.

I imagine grendels would mostly live in tents. Very hi-tech tents, that are stronger than today's houses, but which can roll up and be easily levitated, thus adhering to the word of the law that a grendel can only own what he/she can carry. Most of these tents would be on the Monocle, and the portability of the tents could mean that any political spats among the grendelry could result in moving tents around, to emphasize feuds.

A huge question that needs to be answered before I can go forward with this is: What is the nature of levitation, in Wagner's Grendel universe? I mean, can you kill somebody by tying a noose around their neck and the other end of the rope around a drinks caddy and then sending the caddy skyward? Wagner never explains how levitation works in his stories -- which makes sense. Current novelists don't normally talk about the workings of automobile engines, either. But it's a detail that needs to be worked out before a game can run. So I'm going to upload this page (neat Bryce graphics, eh?) and go bother Wagner's editor and see what she says.
